COVERTAINER CONCEPT ADVANTAGES

COVERTAINER CONCEPT ADVANTAGES

In container shipping, ships operate on fixed routes and carry boxes. The Covertainer concept works on the same principle but is a liquid cargo ship that transports liquid cargo bags. Since the cargo never directly contacts the tank, there’s no need to clean the tank. If the bags removed from the tank are used for the same type of cargo, they don’t need to be cleaned either (they can be single-use diaphragms). In short, it allows for transportation without the need for cleaning.

On major routes such as Rotterdam-Houston, Shanghai-Singapore, and during cross-cargo transitions, the Covertainer concept eliminates the need for tank cleaning operations and empty trips.

In a Covertainer Ship:

  1. There is no cargo pump.
  2. No cargo lines, valves, or manifold.
  3. No tank cleaning pump, line, or machinery.
  4. No heat exchanger.
  5. No cargo pump room.
  6. There is no Framo system, so there is no cargo control room. Ballast control is positioned on the bridge.
  7. If the ship is used efficiently, there is no need for BWTS (Ballast Water Treatment System) because the ship never departs the port empty. It doesn’t carry ballast, so it doesn’t harm aquatic life.
  8. No need to apply special coatings like marine epoxy or zinc on the cargo tanks.
  9. Since the ship does not carry out tank cleaning, it utilizes the time spent on cleaning for cargo transport. It can make an additional two Atlantic crossings per year compared to a standard chemical tanker.
  10. Since there is no tank cleaning, there’s no need for Oil Discharge Monitoring Equipment. It never discharges a drop of liquid into the sea.
  11. Personnel costs are reduced, and working/resting hours become more comfortable.
  12. Fuel consumption per ton of cargo is reduced since there are no empty trips, leading to less carbon emissions.
  13. Costs related to detergents and sweetening chemicals used for cleaning are eliminated.
  14. Since the ship does not clean tanks, it can easily transition to autonomous systems.
  15. The last three cargo problems are eliminated.
  16. The current status of the cargo can be monitored 24/7 via a mobile app without intermediaries.
  17. Since the cargo equipment is not part of the ship's structure, inspections like Sire become simpler.
  18. Since there is no tank cleaning, the risk of entering confined spaces is reduced.
  19. It reduces risks related to cargo contamination, missing cargo, and calculation errors.
  20. The cargo inspection can be completed before the ship arrives, eliminating the risk of tank inspection failures. The ship is guaranteed to load at the port and avoids delays.
